What is the difference between a makeup artist and a hairdresser who does makeup?

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a pro makeup artist and a hairdresser who also does makeup? Well, let me tell you! While they might seem similar, there are actually some key differences between the two.

A makeup artist is a pro at using cosmetics to enhance your features and create unique looks for events, photoshoots, or performances. They have a whole range of skills, including knowledge of color theory, facial anatomy, and all kinds of makeup techniques!

On the other hand, a hairdresser who also does makeup usually focuses more on hair-related services like cutting, styling, coloring, and treatments. They might also offer makeup services, but they’re not specialized in it like makeup artists are.

So, it really comes down to how specialized and knowledgeable each professional is in their respective fields. Both makeup artists and hairdressers are there to help you look and feel great, whether it’s for a special occasion or just everyday life.

Hope that helps!

Transforming My Skin with GLO SKIN BEAUTY

At the age of 40, I noticed the appearance of brown marks on my face, which I initially believed were due to sun damage and age spots. Despite taking preventive measures such as applying extra sunscreen and wearing a hat in the sun, my spots continued to worsen, leaving me feeling defeated. After some research, I discovered that these spots were not only due to sun and age but also a hormone-related condition called melasma.

It took me a long time to find a skincare routine that actually worked for me. Over the years, I’ve tried various homeopathic remedies, budget-friendly products, expensive products, and dermatologist-recommended products. I even underwent chemical peels, skin pens, and other treatments.

But finally, I came across an amazing company called GLO SKIN BEAUTY, whose products have transformed my skin. I’m thrilled to be a GLO BEAUTY ambassador and use my decades of experience to create customized skincare solutions for you using products that I trust. I love GLO BEAUTY not only because of their clean formulas but also because they use safe, ethical, and sustainable ingredients that are gentle on the skin and the environment.

The very first product I tried was the Hydra-Bright Alpha Arbutin Drops. Twice a day…. every day.  I finished a whole bottle and the results were amazing. See the results below!

10 Reasons Why Good Skincare Enhances Your Makeup Look

  1. Smooth canvas: When your skin is well-maintained, your makeup looks smoother and more even. Your foundation and concealer will go on more easily, and you’ll require less product to achieve the desired coverage.
  2. Long-lasting makeup: A regular skincare routine can help to minimize oiliness, dryness, and flakiness, all of which can cause your makeup to wear off more quickly.
  3. Natural glow: A healthy skincare routine helps to brighten and even out your skin tone, giving you a natural radiance that can shine through even your makeup.
  4. Fewer breakouts: By keeping your skin clean and moisturized, you reduce the likelihood of getting pimples, blackheads, and other blemishes.
  5. Better hydration: Moisturized skin is plumper and more supple, which can make fine lines and wrinkles appear less noticeable.
  6. Reduced inflammation: Skincare products that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients can help to calm redness and irritation, making your skin look more even and balanced.
  7. Improved texture: Exfoliating regularly can help to smooth out rough patches and uneven texture, giving your skin a more polished appearance that will enhance your makeup.
  8. More even application: When your skin is free of dead skin cells and other imperfections, your makeup will apply more evenly and look more natural.
  9. Enhanced features: Highlighting and contouring are easier to achieve when your skin is in good condition. You can accentuate your best features without worrying about drawing attention to imperfections.
  10. Confidence boost: When your skin looks and feels great, you’ll feel more confident and ready to take on the day. A regular skincare routine can help you put your best face forward, no matter what life throws your way.

Tips for Achieving Glowing and Radiant Skin

Tips for Achieving Glowing and Radiant Skin

Achieving a glowing, radiant look can be easy with the right tips and tricks. You can enhance your natural features and achieve a dewy complexion that will make everyone wonder what your secret is. Here are some tips to help you achieve that radiant look:

  1. Keep your skin hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential to keep your skin hydrated. Moreover, using a good moisturizer can help lock in moisture and keep your skin looking plump and youthful.
  2. Exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week: Removing dead skin cells is necessary to reveal fresh, new skin underneath. This will help your skin look brighter and more radiant.
  3. Use a soft glow highlighter: Highlighter is an excellent way to add a dewy glow to your skin. Apply highlighter to the high points of your face, such as your cheekbones, brow bone, and the bridge of your nose (not the tip of your nose).
  4. Choose the right foundation: When selecting a foundation, look for one that will give you a natural, dewy finish. Avoid matte foundations, as they can make your skin look dull and flat.
  5. Use a facial mist: Refresh and hydrate your skin throughout the day with a facial mist. Look for a mist that contains ingredients like rosewater or aloe vera, which can help soothe and hydrate your skin.
  6. Don’t forget about your lips: A pop of color on your lips can help brighten your entire face. Look for a lip color that complements your skin tone and gives you a natural, healthy look.

From Little Sponge Applicators to Real Brushes: My Journey of Falling in Love with Makeup

I’ve always loved makeup for as long as I can remember. Watching my mom apply makeup from a very young age was always mesmerizing for me. I remember her taking out the little sponge applicators and swiping browns over her lids. As I grew up, I saw her experiment with more daring colors like blues and pinks of the early 80s. I was fascinated by how she looked at herself in the mirror while applying her makeup quickly. I loved spending as much time with her as I could.

During my middle school years, my mother was absent, so I had to learn about beauty and fashion by trial and error. I experimented with different products and looked at the latest trends in magazines and ads. Fortunately, my grandmother was a fashionista and gave me a subscription to Vogue magazine, which I became obsessed with. To expand my knowledge, I also read Teen Magazine and Cosmo. My best friend and I used to walk to the local drugstore where we would spend hours shopping for makeup and nail products. It was my happy place.

When I moved in with my mom to a town just outside of Los Angeles, that’s when I discovered my love for makeup. It was the early 90s, and department store makeup was all the rage. I always imagined myself working at one of those counters, applying makeup and selling products. However, when I got my first “real” job at the age of 15, I was disappointed to learn that I couldn’t work at one of those counters since you had to be 18 to work there.

When I moved to San Diego to attend SDSU, I discovered MAC Cosmetics at Nordstrom in Fashion Valley Mall. Watching the makeup artists at work and sometimes getting my makeup done by them, I realized that they were true artists with remarkable creativity, skills, and real brushes. They became my idols and taught me all the basics. I still remember my first purchase – a mahogany eye shadow and a crease brush that I bought when I was 18. Even though I don’t use it anymore, I still have that brush. I was eager to learn and did everything I could to improve my skills. This experience was important to me as it helped me develop a passion for makeup and a desire to learn more about it.

Fast forward a few years after I got married, my husband and I moved to Italy. During this time, an opportunity at Clinique in the Exchange became available, and I immediately applied. I was thrilled to be hired on the spot and learned all about different face shapes, skin tones, and basic color theory. I worked at Clinique and also subbed at Estee Lauder, eventually making my way to Lancôme. One day while watching Oprah, I came across a makeup artist named Kevyn Aucoin who had just published a how-to book on makeup. He was a makeup artist to the stars! I ordered his book which I devoured the minute it arrived. I practiced every look in that book over and over again.

I have personally worked at various makeup counters, including the prestigious MAC Counter. My love for makeup continues to this day!

What to expect at your makeup appointment

As a makeup artist, it is essential to ensure that my clients feel comfortable and confident during the makeup application process. Here are some steps I take to ensure that my clients have a positive experience:

  • I always begin by opening up communication and letting them know my studio is a safe space. I take the time to understand their preferences, needs, and dislikes and whether they have any allergies. Additionally, I encourage clients to bring in photos of makeup they like, preferably from my social media or website, as these are unedited and genuine. This helps me create a look that is unique to them and one that they will adore.
  • I ensure that my studio is clean and hygienic. I use clean brushes, sponges, and tools for each client to avoid contamination.
  • I explain the makeup application process to my clients step-by-step so that they know what to expect. This helps to ease their nerves and make them feel more comfortable. Sometimes, they even learn a few new things.
  • When I show my clients the end result, I make sure that they are happy and feel confident with their new look.
